The Process - Is it Painful?

If you remember the embarrassment that you felt during the time that you were young, when you had to smile and there is a missing gap between your two front teeth – just imagine how uncomfortable it must be for an adult to smile with a missing tooth or set of teeth. Although some may say that having a perfect smile is purely for aesthetic purposes only, it would add greatly to your self-confidence if you can eat, smile and laugh freely in public without the fear of your denture accidentally falling off. Dental implants are an ideal solution if you have a chipped tooth, if you are missing a set of teeth or if you would like to improve the general quality of your smile.

With dental implants, the natural crown is replaced by a manufactured tooth which is usually made of porcelain or other non-precious metal. Now, the root which holds the tooth or teeth in place is replaced by implants which are made of titanium. This is the metal type which is the most compatible with the human biology. The implant is takes the shape of a screw and once it is embedded in the jawline, the root of the new, implanted tooth actually becomes stronger as compared to the natural tooth.

Now, if you are considering undergoing this dental procedure and you are concerned with the level of discomfort that you will feel during the procedure, there is actually no need to worry. The level of pain that you will feel is similar to having a sore tooth pulled out. The dentist will use a local anesthetic if there is only one or two implants needed. Depending on the complexity of the dental procedure needed, a general anesthetic may be used. It is good to have your dentist briefly explain the steps to you first so that you would know what level of pain to expect during and after the procedure. As a final note, do not forget to take care of your implants the same way that you would care for your natural teeth by flossing, brushing and visiting the dentist regularly.
